Supported by philanthropy, this Trent University bursary helps students overcome systemic barriers to higher education

Samantha McPherson’s journey to becoming a Registered Nurse (RN) is defined by resilience, sacrifice, and determination. The Trent University Black Heritage Student Bursary has helped her every step of the way.

Samantha, a registered practical nurse and single mother to four-year-old Karter, returned to school last year to improve her undergraduate grades. The Trent bursary was essential to giving her enough financial security to cut back her work hours and focus on her studies to meet the rigorous academic requirements to gain admission to the Trent Fleming School of Nursing (TFSON).

“I am so thankful to the person who funded this bursary, which was a lifeline for allowing me to study without worrying about how to make ends meet,” she says. “I’m thrilled to report that I’ve been accepted into Nursing School for September 2025!”

During Black History Month, the University is shining a spotlight on this important bursary that helps students overcome systemic barriers that can exist for people of colour.

As a mother and mature student, Samantha knew that she couldn’t afford to make mistakes. She had no safety net - no financial backup, no generational wealth, and no registered educational savings plans to fall back on. If she didn’t get the grades she needed, she would not have been able to afford to retake the courses. This realization pushed her to be hyper-organized and proactive. She completed assignments two weeks in advance and, with help from Trent’s Academic Skills department, crafted a meticulous schedule that balanced her three priorities: parenting, study time, and work.

Her story is also a testament to the generosity of an anonymous Trent alumni supporter who wanted to create more opportunities for those who are determined to succeed despite financial and systemic challenges. Whose generosity has opened doors for more students, allowing them to dream big.

"As someone who benefited greatly from my Trent Experience, I understand the power of opportunity,” says Trent alumni supporter. “I wanted to give back by supporting students who face additional challenges. This bursary helps give students the financial support they need to focus on their studies and realize their potential. I believe in their dreams and in their ability to make a difference in the world."

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, help empower more students by contributing to the Black Heritage Student Bursary. Your support helps break down financial barriers and creates lasting opportunities for students to succeed at Trent University.
